Christian Dior Spring Couture 2011

I normally wouldn’t consider drawing a Couture look, I don’t know why. It’s not that I don’t like Couture, I appreciate and respect it. I understand the painstaking work that goes into each collection and each piece and have bled before for the sake of fashion and design, hand-stitching tiny, little beads, knitting 25 roses in an unimaginably short time and handstitching a leather neckpiece together. I have certainly had my share of cuts, scrapes, and the old blood, sweat and tears, but the feeling you get when you see your look coming down the runway totally blows that away, it’s pretty awesome, I can totally understand the art of Couture and why people love it so much. Couture to me is about classic cut, shape and style, with a bit of fantasy thrown in, but ultimately it has an elegant, old hollywood feel, not particularly something I would wear myself but something I admire all the same. I like my Couture to have a bit of grit to it, a bit of darkness and drama.

When I was 13 I loved pretty things, pink mainly, and something like the Elie Saab Couture collection would have been my ultimate fantasy. I still do adore it, but my 20 year old self needs more pizaz than pretty to make me want to draw it and really fall in love with it.

That is why I have chosen this look from the house of Dior. Firstly, I was drawn in by the striking makeup, the red eyebrows, the red lips and dark eyes with pops of colour. Then, the headpieces and the clothing. The backstory to the collection sealed the deal. John Galliano had originally trained  to be a fashion illustrator, which is where his inspiration for this particular Couture collection sprung from. The gradient of colour from light to dark as if he were playing with watercolours, the brush and eraser markings created with embroidery  are all done in an “illustrative way” as John Galliano said.

Though my taste has changed, one thing remains the same, my love of theatrics in fashion and this look encapsulates that to me.
