Christian Dior Spring Couture 2011

I normally wouldn’t consider drawing a Couture look, I don’t know why. It’s not that I don’t like Couture, I appreciate and respect it. I understand the painstaking work that goes into each collection and each piece and have bled before for the sake of fashion and design, hand-stitching tiny, little beads, knitting 25 roses in an unimaginably short time and handstitching a leather neckpiece together. I have certainly had my share of cuts, scrapes, and the old blood, sweat and tears, but the feeling you get when you see your look coming down the runway totally blows that away, it’s pretty awesome, I can totally understand the art of Couture and why people love it so much. Couture to me is about classic cut, shape and style, with a bit of fantasy thrown in, but ultimately it has an elegant, old hollywood feel, not particularly something I would wear myself but something I admire all the same. I like my Couture to have a bit of grit to it, a bit of darkness and drama.

When I was 13 I loved pretty things, pink mainly, and something like the Elie Saab Couture collection would have been my ultimate fantasy. I still do adore it, but my 20 year old self needs more pizaz than pretty to make me want to draw it and really fall in love with it.

That is why I have chosen this look from the house of Dior. Firstly, I was drawn in by the striking makeup, the red eyebrows, the red lips and dark eyes with pops of colour. Then, the headpieces and the clothing. The backstory to the collection sealed the deal. John Galliano had originally trained  to be a fashion illustrator, which is where his inspiration for this particular Couture collection sprung from. The gradient of colour from light to dark as if he were playing with watercolours, the brush and eraser markings created with embroidery  are all done in an “illustrative way” as John Galliano said.

Though my taste has changed, one thing remains the same, my love of theatrics in fashion and this look encapsulates that to me.

Lots of Love

I just realized that I wasn’t following you properly on bloglovin’…but I am now! I was like, “Where’s Meg?” ha ha
This is one of my new faves! Couture is all about fantasy and theatrics to me and you nailed it from the detailing to the body language. This look was truly meant to be illustrated and presented as the piece of art that it is. Brilliant job. x

Aww haha bless! I know it’s a bit confusing for everyone at the moment, would be so much easier if there was something that could transfer all your readers to the new blog, for all of you and me!
Thanks Brooke! :) I know, the first time I saw this look I knew it was “the one” and could see it illustrated straight away! Definitely deserved a couture pose I thought :P

J’ADORE!!! Meg you’ve outdone yourself. I’m really speechless. I spent 5 minutes just STARING at your drawing and taking in all the details. I love John Galliano and I, too, had read somewhere he was an illustrator, which makes perfect sense when you look at the things he designs.

    As always, love your work!

I know, John Galliano is like a magician! I always marvel at his theatrical shows, they’re always full of character, especially the Mens shows under his own name. They are the best, most interesting mens collections! :)

Now – I like all your drawings – but this one … YOU OUTDID YOURSELF! I think you found your look. You should do more of these dramatic fashion looks. I mean WOW. This is lovely, amazing, eye-stopping, jaw-dropping fabulous. I just posted about the new Zac Posen collection – and I would personally love to see your artistic take on the third girl down on the left {http://wonderpuggraphics.com/blog/2011/02/11/friday-fashion-break-z-spoke-by-zac-posen/}. I mean she is wearing a classic LBD but I just feel like with her facial expression, body positioning, etc, you could totally create something fabulous. No pressure. lol!

Thanks Carolann, I’m glad you like this one! This one is probably my favourite fashion illustration look too, purely because of the dramatic makeup. Oh I LOVED zac posens z spoke photos! There were a couple I thought I’d like to draw, the makeup is super creepy too so definitely what I like! I’ll have a look at the one you suggested! :)

Firstly I adore your new website!

This outfit definitely has pizaz and you captured it in bucketloads! I loved the elie Saab collection was stunning, but perhaps a bit froufrou, while this is all elegance.

    • thejerseygem says:

Aw thank you Harriet, I’m really glad the new site seems to be going down well :)
I totally agree, i LOVE the Elie Saab collection but definitely too froufrou and slightly “boring” to draw!
      xoxo
